Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this monumental 4 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "P. H. Smith."
This is the mark of Phillip Smith who made pottery in Springfield Township, Ohio in the 1840's and 1850's under this stamp (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware , pp. 79-80).
Made around the 1850's, this Jug has the Impressed Capacity Number and Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Swipes and a Brushed Cobalt Decoration. Stands 17" tall.
Excellent Condition. A few light stain runs and a couple minor 3/8" chips on the base. That's it! No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Some manufacturing imperfections: Two flat chips on the top of the spout, a large "V" shaped fold on right side toward the back from a drying line inside (closeup), and a 3" vertical firing line on the bottom -- all in the making.
