Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "P. H. Smith."
This is the mark of Phillip Smith who made pottery in Springfield Township, Ohio in the 1840's and 1850's under this stamp (See F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware , pp. 79-80).
Made around the 1850's, this Jar has the Early Ovoid Form, and Impressed Capacity Number and Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Swipe. Stands 13 3/4" tall.
Very Good. A few small chips around the inner rim where a lid would sit, a 1/4" chip inside the top rimand a 7/8" outside the top rim behind the right handle, and a 2" hairline with some associated glaze-only lines on the back at the bottom (closeup). No base chips, stains, or restoration. A 3" firing line on the bottom in the making.
