Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 5 Gallon Jug made and stamped by "N. A. White & Son, Utica, N.Y."

This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware , pp. 69-70).

Dating about 1870, this beauty features a Large 5 Gallion Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Huge Paddletail Bird on an Orchid Branch. This is one of White's signature decorations and a perennial favorite with collectors. An abundance of rich cobalt blue.  The bird is 11 1/2" from the tip of his beak to the tip of his tail.  The branch has five striped leaves at the base, an orchid blossom, and seven buds.  Brilliant cobalt throughout the decoration.  Stands 18" tall!

The largest jug with a Paddletail Bird that I recall ever seeing!

Excellent Condition.  A 5" in-body vertical hairline below the handle (closeup), and some scattered light staining.  That's it!  No chips, cracks, or restoration.
