Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Crock made by "Murta & Sons, Stoneware Manufaturers, Beaver, Beaver Co., PA".
Henry Murta made stoneware in Beaver from the 1870's into the 1880's. He was a small operation employing only 4 men part time according to the 1880 census (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, p. 137).
This beauty features a Very Strong and Complete Stenciled Advertising Label in 6 Lines. The cobalt and the crispness of the stencil have few rivals. Measures 9 1/4" tall and 9" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A surface-only 1 1/2" line at the rim on the right side, and some staining on the right side and back from use. That's it! No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
I think this is only the second Murta crock that I have ever had to offer. They had very small production numbers.
