Item 5106
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 5 Gallon Double-Handled Jug made and stamped by "Whites Utica."
This is a work of Nicholas White and his sons, William and Charles, who ran the family pottery from 1865-1886 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 69-70).
This beauty features a Tall Tapered Form with Double Handles, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and an Elaborate Floral Executed with a Slip Cup. The floral has leaves on the left of the stem that look like a butterfly has landed, and a rose in bloom and more leaves on the right. Lots of other detail too! The decoration is a signature one for Whites, but here in a larger version. Stands 18 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A minor 3/16" nibble inside the spout, and some light, small and scattered staining. That's it! No outer spout or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Small bubbles in the cobalt in the making.
