Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "John Burger, Rochester."
This is the mark of John Burger who founded the family's pottery under this stamp and ran it from 1854-1867 (William Ketchum, American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and Freehand Capacity Number "2" Enveloped by a Cobalt Wreath Executed with a Slip Cup in Strong Cobalt. Intricate and exceptionally nice artwork! Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 5/8" chip inside and on the front of the rim, two chips on the back of the rim (3/16", 1"), and some light scattered staining. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A faint 1 1/2" surface firing line at the base in the making.
