Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Stoneware Jar made by "James Hamilton & Co., Manufacturers, Greensboro, Pa."
James Hamilton ran his pottery in Greensboro from the 1860's to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features Top to Bottom Decoration. A straight stripe accents the rim and a squiggle stripe adorns the shoulder. The company advertising surrounding a fancy emblem occupies the body, while the capacity number flanked by leaves and an additional stripe decorate the base. Strong contrast and visual appeal. A lip inside to hold a lid which is not often found on Hamilton jars. Stands 12" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some surface wear to the letting, otherwise as made. A small kiln kiss on the front in the making.
