Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this spectacular 4 Gallon Stoneware Jar made and stamped by "J. Swank & Co., Johnstown, PA ."
This is the work of Jacob Swank who ran the pottery in Johnstown in the 1860's and 1870's (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp 100-103).
Dating to the 1860's, this beauty features a Clear Pottery Stamp Under One Handle, Freehand Vining and Tulips on Each Side, and Cobalt Accents with Cobalt Dashes Below Each Handle. A nicely decorated and handsome jar. Stands 14 3/4" tall.
Professional restoration to a line from the shoulder band to the bottom and onto the base. It is in the closeup to the right of my pen. Extremely well done and virtually invisible inside and out. Otherwise as made.
