    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by "J. S. Taft & Company, Keene, N.H."


    This is the mark of James Scholly Taft and his uncle, James Burnap who sold pottery under this stamp from 1871-1874 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 39).


    The form and decoration on this pottery indicates that Taft pottery was made in Fort Edward, New York.


    This beauty sports the Distributor's Stamp and one of the signature Fort Edward decorations, the Large and Elaborate Cobalt Stylized Floral in Strong Cobalt Blue. The floral measures 10" across and is accented with dots, dashes, and shadowing.  Stands 12" tall.


    Very Good Condition.  Glaze wear inside the bottom, A small crow's foot in the glaze below the pottery stamp, some wear to the cobalt in the bottom of the right leaf, some glaze flakes on the back bottom and underside, and light staining from use.   No rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.  A 1" drying line inside the rim in the making.
