Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this cute 1 gallon stoneware jug made and stamped by "J. Norton & Co., Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton, his son Luman, and his cousin Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1859-1861 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp, 42, 44).
This beauty features the pottery stamp with cobalt wash, and a bluebird proudly poised on a branch. Whoever mixed the cobalt that day really got it right- rich and shiny. Stands 11 1/2" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/8" wide chip on the left side of the spout, and some staining on the right side toward the back from use. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
A cute little bluebird on a cute little jug from Vermont!
