Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Cream Pot made and stamped by "J. Mantell, Penn Yan."
This is the work of James Mantell who potted in Penn Yan, New York from 1856-1876 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 72) .
This beauty features a Tapered-Sides Cream Pot Form, Semi-Squared Rim, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large Brushed Cobalt Tulip. The tulip has four leaves, a blossom with seven petals, and a bud. Warm gray glaze, gorgeous cobalt, pleasing contrast. Measures 12" tall and 11 1/2" wide across the top.
Good Condition. A chip inside the rim (1/2"), two chips outside the rim (1/4", 3/4"), a 5" hairline from the rim down on the right side of the decoration (closeup 1), and a 5" hairline below the right handle toward the back only partially visible inside (closeup 2). No base chips or restoration.
