Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Gorgeous 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Signature Norton Decoration, the Large Thistle with Lots of Foliage Going in all Directions! Exceptionally rich cobalt applied with a slip cup too! Stands 12 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Two minor nibbles inside the spout, two small adjacent flakes outside the spout (1/8", 1/4"), two glaze chips by the flower (3/16", 3/8"), and wear along the right side of the handle. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains or restoration. A stone ping to the left of the pottery stamp, and a salt drip below the flower in the making.
