Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Bird on a Branch Decoration Executed with a Slip Cup. As you know, not that common to find a bird on a cake crock! Measures 7 1/4" tall nd 10" wide across the top.
Good Condition. Two 1/4" chips inside the rim, and an 1/8" nibble outside the rim, a 1/2" chip under the left handle, a stain and line through the base of the right handle on the right side that is very secure (closeup), and scattered glaze flakes by the left handle near the base. No body hairlines, cracks, or restortion.
