Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 4 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."

This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).

This beauty sports the potter's stamp with cobalt wash and one of the signature and most desired Norton decorations:  the Pheasant on a Stump!  Standing in all his glory, this bird is drawn with a slip cup in brilliant cobalt blue.  Stands 17 1/4" tall.

Excellent Condition.  Overall fine crazing and light staining from age.  That's it!  No chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.  Two stone pings and one small impress on the shoulder in the making.
