Item 3900

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."

This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).

This beauty sports the potter's stamp with cobalt wash and one of the signature and most desired Norton decorations:  the Pheasant on a Stump!  Standing in all his glory, this bird is drawn with a slip cup in brilliant cobalt blue.  The bird has an elaborate mix of feathers with plenty of details and dots, and measures 9" from head to tail.  The stump in which he poses emerges out of ground cover and has two prominent stems with shading.  Stands 16" tall.

Excellent Condition.  Three minor nibbles on the spout (1/8" to 3/16"), a 3/8" chip above the bird and two 1/4" chips to the left of the bird, and a couple small and light stains.  That's it.  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.  A couple faint firing lines on the spout and a small stone ping on the front bottom in the making.

An exceptional example of an exception design.
