Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Gorgeous 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Julius Norton and his cousin Edward Norton who worked together in the family pottery from 1850-1859 ( William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 41-44).
This beauty sports the potter's stamp with cobalt wash and one of the signature Norton decorations: Swirl Leaves in Exceptional Cobalt Applied with a Slip Cup.
One of the best examples that I have ever seen with this decoration.
Excellent Condition. A stain and manufacturing imperfection on the right side, and a 3/4" chip on the bottom of the left side. That's it! No spout chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
