Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this fantastic 5 Gallon Decorated Crock made and stamped by "J. & E. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the work of Julius Norton and his cousin, Edward Norton who worked in Bennington using this mark from 1850-1859 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 42).
This beauty features the Uncommon Large Size, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Norton Classic: a Chick Pecking Corn amidst Ground Cover, Tree, and Fence! The cobalt blue is spectacular! Measures 13" by 13".
Very Good Conditon. A 1/2" chip on the rim in the back, a 4" hairline from the rim to the base of the handle on the right side (closeup 1), and a small T at the bottom of the left side that trails under as a spider, little of which is visible inside (closeups 2 & 3). No inner rim or base chips, stains, or restoration.
