    Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Uncommon 4 Gallon Semi-Ovoid Jar made and stamped by "J. C. Wilbur."


    This is the stamp of John Church Wilbur (born 1816) of Putnam, Muskingum County, Ohio in the 1850's and 1860's.   See James L. Murphy's Checklist of 19th Century Bluebird Potters and Potteries in Muskingum County, Ohio, pp. 431-432. 


    This beauty features a Semi-Ovoid Form, Finely Tooled Rim for Tieing a Waxed Paper or Cloth Over the Top, and Impressed Pottery Stamp. Stands 15" tall.


    Excellent Condition.  A 3/8" chip inside the rim and a 1 1 4" chip outside the rim above the left handle.  That's it!  No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
