Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Crock made by "Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, Pa."
This is the work of Frank Hamilton and John Jones who worked in Greensboro from 1865 to 1897 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 154-157).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features a Top to Bottom Decoration. From the top down are a stripe; the company advertising surrounding a fancy center floral with a daisy in the upper corners and a floral garland below; a capacity number flanked by leaves, and a bottom stripe. Very light clay and dark cobalt making a strong contrast. Measures 14" tall and 11 1/2" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Four small chips on the bottom roll of the tooled rim (1/4" to 3/8"), and some small, scattered stains. That's it! No top of the rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
A very clean example of a Hamilton and Jones crock. As you know, crocks by this maker are scarce.
