• Item 4974

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this uncommon 2 Gallon Crock made and stamped by "H. M. Whitman, Havana, N.Y."

This is the work of Henry M. Whitman who potted in Havana only from 1860-1862 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware , p. 72).T

This beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Striking Star Burst with Center Floral.  The decoration took considerable time-  56 lines of cobalt!  (I must not have enough to do!).  All the cobalt is bright and shiny.   Measures 8 1/2" tall and 9 3/4" wide across the top.

I found this starburst pattern with center floral on a churn by Whitman that sold in 2014 for $2,300.  This decoration was used by Whitman's successor,  A. O. Whittemore, and was also used by Thompson Harrington of Lyons (1852-1872) who often replaced the flower with a face.

Excellent Condition.  Some faint water glass staining inside from use.  That's it!  No chips, hairlines, cracks, outer stains, or restoration.   A 1/2" chip at the base in the making.

Only one I have ever had to sell with this decoration.
