Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Tiny 8 1/4" Merchant Jug that reads, "Made for Wm. Grange & Sons, Queensware Dealers, 711 N. Second St., Philadelphia."
This jug is easily attributed to Richard Remmey of Philadelpia. Richard Remmey made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features a Very Small Size and 5 Lines of Impressed Advertising with Cobalt Wash. Note that the top and two bottom lines are impressed upside down. Stands 8 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 3/8" chip inside the spout that is partially in the making, and a 1/4" chip on the underside at the edge. That's it! No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
You rarely see merchant jugs by Remmey, especially in this small size.
