Item 3270

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this monumental 3 Gallon Semi-Ovoid Jug made and stamped by "N. Clark & Co., Rochester, N.Y."

This is the mark of Nathan Clark who founded a pottery in Athens, N.Y. with branches in Lyons, Mount Morris, and Rochester. This is from the Rochester branch that was opened in 1839 and sold to John Burger in 1854 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, 66).

This beauty features the Semi-Ovoid Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and Large Daffodil Executed with Striking Artistry and Rich Cobalt!!!  Five leaves hold up a blossom with five leaves and a center with seven stamin.  Two buds adorn the right side of the decoration.  All the design is accented with cobalt shading.  Stands 16 1/4" tall.

Exceptional Condition.  Other than a couple minor stains on the back, the jug is as made.  No spout or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.  A narrow chip on top of the spout and a couple kiln touches in the making.

This jug is one of the finest pieces of Rochester stoneware that I have ever had to offer.
