Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 3 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "F. B. Norton & Co., Worcester, Mass."
This is the mark of Frank Norton and Frederick Hancock who worked together from 1858-1877 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, pp. 52-53).T
his beauty features a Tall Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Gorgeous Parrot on a Plume Decoration Executed with a Combination Slip Cup and Brush. The decoration is well-drawn and the cobalt is 10 out of 10. On the light clay background the decoration really makes for a great contrast and visual appeal. Measures 15" tall.
This is one of Norton's signature decorations that always is a crowd pleaser. Of particular note on this example is the beautiful shading from light to dark cobalt throughout the decoration.
Excellent Condition. A 3/8" chip on the spout. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A faint superficial drying line where the handle meets the spout (closeup) and another much small one at the base of the handle--both typically produced in the making.
