Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this imposing 5 Gallon Stoneware Crock made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44)
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Large Bird on a Bouquet of Flowers in Strong and Shiny Cobalt. The bird is 8" from the tip of his or her beak to the tip of the tail feathers. Measures 12 1/2" tall and wide across the top.
Good Condition. Flat 1/2" chip on the top of the rim, half dozen small chip outside the rim (1/4" or less), some chippage on each handle, A 3/4" chip on the underside at the edge, and some flakes near the bottom. No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
