Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this handsome 4 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44).
This beauty sports a Tall and Stately Form, Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and a Large and Elaborate Dotted Leaf Decoration. The leaf is 10" tall and bears 16 Fronds and 22 dots! The decoration was applied with a slip cup in bright and shiny cobalt. Stands 16 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Four chips on the spout (3/8" to 1"). Some surface lines, one on the spout and some on the back near the bottom (closeup). Some light staining from use. No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
