Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this Monumental 4 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44)
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Large Bird on a Plume in Strong Cobalt. The bird is 10" from the tip of his or her beak to the tip of the tail feathers. The plume is 11" long. The bird is large on a large canvas. The cobalt is rich and shiny like we like it too! Stands 17 1/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 7/8" chip on the top of the spout in the back (closeup). That's it! No basd chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A glaze drip under the bird's tail and a 1" firing line at the base- both in the making.
