Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 4 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44).
This beauty sports a Large Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and one of the signature Norton decorations, the Big and Bold Bird on a Floral Bouquet. The bird is 8 1/2" from his beak to the end of his tail. He is executed in very strong and shiny cobalt blue. The floral replaces the typical branch and is a great combination of leaves and dots. Measures 16 1/4" tall.
This jug descended in a family from Rutland, Vermont and has just come into inventory.
Excellent Condition. A minor 1/8" nibble on the spout and some light staining at the bottom of the left side and back. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. Very shiny glaze.
