Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this truly gorgeous 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44).
This beauty sports a clear pottery stamp with cobalt wash and one of the signature Norton decorations harking back to the days of J. & E. Norton: the Elaborate Floral Bouquet in Brilliant Cobalt Blue. The bouquet has leaves, flowers, and tendrils going everywhere! The decoration was applied with a slip cup. Bright and shiny cobalt and exceptionally clean glaze. Measures 13 1/2" tall.
This is one of best examples by this maker that I have ever had to sell.
Excellent Condition. A single shallow 3/8" chip on the spout, a small 3/16" chip on the front out of the decoration, and a small stain drip on the back. That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration. A 1/4" chip on the bottom of edge of the floral in the making.
