Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this attractive 2 Gallon Stoneware Preserve Jar made and stamped by "E. & L. P. Norton, Bennington, VT."
This is the mark of Edward Norton and Luman Preston Norton, the son of Julius Norton, who worked together in the family pottery from 1861-1881 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 44)
This beauty sports the pottery stamp with cobalt wash and a Signature Norton Decoration- A Bird on a Leaf Executed with a Slip Cup and Brush. Bright Bennington cobalt throughout the decoration on a light clay for strong contrast. Stands 10 3/8" tall.
Excellent Condition. A couple 1/8" nibbles on the inner rim, an 1/8" nibble on the left handle, and some faint water glass staining from use. No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, or restoration.
