2 Gallon Stoneware Jug
Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this early 2 Gallon Ovoid Jar stamped, "E. H. Merrill."
This is the mark of E. H. Merrill, one of Ohio's earliest potters who worked in Springfield Township and Middlebury, Ohio in the 1830's to 1850's (F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, pp. 30-33).
Made around 1840, this jar has an Early Ovoid Form with the Pottery Stamp Accented in Cobalt. Stands 9 3/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. A chip on the front of the rim (1 1/4") and one on the back (1/2"). Six chips on the underside (1/4" to 1"), only one of which is on the edge. That's it! No inner rim chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
