Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 5 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."
This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg with this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners , pp. 55-58).
Thus beauty features the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, Cobalt Accents at the Handles, and a Cluster of Eight Grapes and a Large Leaf Hanging from a Vine. The decoration is executed with strong cobalt. The grapes are 1 1/4" wide too. Measures 13 1/2" tall and 12" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. A 1/2" narrow crescent chip inside the rim, a 3" surface-only craze line by the right handle (closeup), and a thin 1/4" chip on the left handle. That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Out of round in the making.
An extraordinary Cowden and Wilcox Jar.
