Item 3678

Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this splendiferous 1 Gallon Jar made and stamped by "Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA."

This is the mark of John Wallace Cowden and Isaac Wilcox who ran the pottery in Harrisburg with this stamp from 1863 to 1880 (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners , pp. 55-58).

Thus beauty features a Sweet Little 1 Gallon Size, the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash, and A Bouquet of Three Irises.  The blossoms have two dangling petals and a center one with frilled edge-- all gathered in the arms of welcoming leaves.  The decoration is executed with strong and shiny cobalt.  Stands 9 7/8" tall.

Excellent Condition.  Very minor nibbles on the inner rim where a lid would sit, a 1/2" surface ping line on the rim by the left handle,  two minor chips on the left handle (1/8", 1/4"), and a 3/4" chip on the bottom edge,  No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.

A Cowden and Wilcox preserve jar with very unusual and eye-pleasing decoration.
