Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Crock stamped "Cortland."
This is the stamp of Madison Woodruff who ran the pottery in Cortland from 1849-1885 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 71).
This beauty sports the Pottery Stamp with Cobalt Wash and a Fantastic Floral with Ground Cover, Adjoining Plants, and Crossed Tulip Stems with Buds and Dashes Everywhere! The decoration is executed with a slip cup in bright and shiny cobalt. Clean background clay for a very strong contrast and dramatic presentation. Stands 10 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. Some minor nibbles on the inner rim where a lid would sit, three small chips inside the top rim (1/8" to 1/2"), a flat 5/8" chip on the outside of the rim in the back, and a minor 1/4" flake at the base. That's it! No hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration.
A very appealing Woodruff crock!
