Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 12 1/2" Decorated Cake Crock Lid.
This is the work of Richard Remmey who made stoneware in Philadelphia at the family pottery from the 1860's to the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-9).
Circa 1860, this beauty features Three Cobalt Leaves around the Center Knob. Nine brushstrokes of cobalt for each leaf. Measures 12 1/2" in diameter and fits in an opening at least 10 1/4" wide.
As you know, cake crock lids over 10" are hard to find.
Excellent Condition. Two chips on the knob (1/4", 1/2"), and two chips on the bottom of seating ring on the underside (1/2", 1"). That's it! No edge chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Two drying lines on the edge in the making (1/2", 1", closeup).
