Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 2 Gallon Preserve Jar made and stamped by "Burger & Lang, Rochester, N.Y."
This is the mark of John Burger, Jr., George Burger, and their brother-in-law, George Lang who ran the family's pottery under this stamp from 1867-1877 (William Ketchum, Jr., American Stoneware, p. 74).
This beauty sports the pottery stamp with cobalt wash and a signature decoration for this maker: An Elaborate Cobalt Tulip Executed with a Slip Cup. The decorators at Burger were some of the best and this tulip shows considerable skill in shading and accenting of the decoration. Measures 13 3/4" tall.
Excellent Condition. A 1/4" chip on the rim above the right handle which itself has a 3/4" chip. That's it! No inner rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A stone ping on the right side in the making as shown.
