Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this wonderful 1 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Merchant Jar that reads, "From Allen & Bro., 23 & 25 So. 4th St., Phila."
The decoration makes it easy to attribute this jar to Richard Remmey of Philadelphia. He ran the family pottery in Philadelphia from the 1860's until the turn of the century (Phil Shaltenbrand, Big Ware Turners, pp. 8-10).
Dating to the 1870's, this beauty features Four Lines of Impressed Advertising and Four Large Leaves in Deep Cobalt Around the Middle. Stands 11 3/4" tall.
Very Good Condition. Five small chips on the outside of the rim (1/8" to 1/2"), and a 4" hairline in the middle of the right side, with only the bottom half showing inside (closeup 1). That's it! No base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. A 1 1/2" surface drying line on the base from a stone ping on the bottom in the making (closeup 2).
