Coming to you from Doc's Crocks is this handsome 1/2 Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock. It has an auction label on the bottom that reads, "Garth's, May 20, 1995, Collection of Ellie Hoover-Walker."
The decoration makes it is easy to attribute this crock to William and Charles Wingender of Haddonfield, N.J. They ran the pottery in Haddonfield from 1883 to 1923. This is an earlier work as its salt glaze and cobalt brushed decoration attest.
This beauty features a Squared Rim, Straight Sides, and Five Squiggles or Clouds Around the Middle. This was one of Wingender's signature decorations. Measures 4 1/2" tall and 6 1/2" wide across the top.
Excellent Condition. Two 1/4" flakes inside the rim and a small surface Y on the base not seen inside. That's it! No outer rim or base chips, hairlines, cracks, stains, or restoration. Some roughness on top of the rim and slightly out-of-round in the making.
